Just saw Whatever Works last night. Very old school Woody Allen. Figures, though—the script was originally written for Zero Mostel in the early 70s but wasn’t made because the Producers star died that year. The director held onto the story and decided to make it quickly and in New York (a shift from his last 4 films) when last year’s imminent actor’s strike scared him out of taking months to write something new.
Larry David speaking Woody’s words didn’t induce the Jewgasm I thought it would, but shit was still tight. Evan Rachel Wood was great as a southern Scarlett Johansen and New Orleans’ bornĀ Patricia Clarkson was awesome as a religious helicopter mom turned menage troising hipster.
Above: Not all that related to the movie is a clip from 1989’s New York Stories where David and Allen cross paths for what might be the first time.
enjoy.
